Hockey Canada's
SPEAK OUT Program!

WHAT IS THE SPEAK OUT! PROGRAM?

Speak Out! is a comprehensive program developed for hockey to prevent harassment, abuse and bullying. Created by volunteers, staff members and professionals in the area of harassment and abuse, it is the first program of its kind to tackle these serious issues head on.

WHO IS THE PROGRAM FOR?

Over the last three years, our program containing training, education, and awareness of harassment and abuse has been delivered through the workshops, resource materials, and branch and association initiatives. Our sessions and materials to date have focused on coaches, managers, safety people, parents, players, and administrators.

WHO IS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THE 'SPEAK OUT, IT'S MORE THAN JUST A GAME' WORKSHOP?

Although we recommend this workshop for everyone involved with hockey, Hockey Canada requires that all coaches complete the Speak Out! workshop as part of their ongoing training. Some Branches do require all coaches, safety people, trainers and administrators to complete the Speak Out! workshop.

WHY ARE COACHES MADE TO COMPLETE THIS PROGRAM?

In 1997, when the Speak Out! program was introduced, coaches wanted information to help them not only respond to harassment and abuse situations, but more importantly to prevent these situations from occuring. The coach plays a huge role in creating a respectful atmosphere in the game and is a central player in the prevention strategy. Coaches are also in a unique position of being able to communicate with both parents and players. The education of coaches is seen as an effective component in getting the Speak Out! information to the grassroots participant.

HOW LONG IS THE 'SPEAK OUT, IT'S MORE THAN JUST A GAME' WORKSHOP?

The 'Speak Out, It's More Than Just a Game' workshop runs about 4 hours. Topics of the workshop include: abuse, harassment, and prevention of abuse and harassment.

I HAVE TAKEN THE CANADIAN HOCKEY SAFETY PROGRAM WHICH HAS A MODULE ON HARASSMENT AND ABUSE PREVENTION. DOES THIS MEAN I DON'T HAVE TO TAKE THE FOUR HOUR WORKSHOP?

No. The module within the Safety Program is a shorter awareness module that covers situations specific to a Safety Person or trainer. ALthough there is some overlap with the Speak Out! workshop, the full workshop provides more detailed information on both responding to and preventing harassment and abuse.

WHO DO I CONTACT TO PARTICIPATE IN THE WORKSHOP?

As a volunteer, this program is an essential part of your training and knowledge. You should talk to your local association or Branch about participating in a Speak Out! session in your area.

IS THE WORKSHOP THE ONLY COMPONENT OF SPEAK OUT?

No. The Speak Out! workshop is only one component of the program. Other components include: posters and brochures, parents' guide, criminal records search, as well as volunteer and coach application forms.

DON'T FORGET TO VISIT THE NEW PARENT'S PAGE AND OUR 'RELAX IT'S JUST A GAME' CAMPAIGN!

As a parent in the game you play an important role in creating a safe, respectful environment for your son or daughter. Hockey Canada has created this site in an effort to pass on important information to you as a parent and to provide you with resources that are important as your son or daughter progresses through this great game.

WHO CAN I CONTACT FOR MORE INFORMATION?

For more information on harassment and abuse or the Speak Out! program you can visit the Hockey Canada wedsite at www.hockeycanada.ca or you can contact your Branch Office.
